Twilight Jetty County Fermanagh by Aidan Monaghan
by Aidan Monaghan
A timber jetty, bristling with frost in the twilight of a winter’s evening at Castle Archdale, County Fermanagh. The Photograph was taken at the turn of the new year in early January during an exceptionally cold spell of weather. It was the first time in years that I had observed such a substantial area of Upper Lough Erne completely frozen over for an extended period of time. The deep freeze lasted almost two weeks.
These beautiful but treacherous conditions produce some of the most stunning and seductive changes in colour and light that I have had the privilege to observe. In this photograph the sun has long since set yet the clear crisp winter sky is filled with the deep blues and magentas that you only get at this time of year. These colours our reflected by the Lough and absorbed by the individual ice crystals that have formed upon the jetty, giving it a subtle purple glow in the twilight.
